Project 14: Cardiac operation for Noi
CHF 3,870
Through Bodhi, an extremely active NGO worker in Phuket, Niklaus Siegrist (Chairman of the Association) found out about Noi, a 42-year-old Thai woman who has selflessly devoted her time and energy to managing the reconstruction of Tung Dap village in the wake of the tsunami.
Noi had found out that she had a defective heart valve and required immediate surgery. With her standard Thai health insurance she would have had to wait one or two years for the operation, but according to a cardiac specialist she would not have survived the waiting period. Bodhi was able to persuade a cardiac surgeon at the Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok to help out. He agreed to perform the operation free of charge in his "spare time".
The costs for the operation, the recovery period in hospital and post-operative treatment were met by a donation of USD 3,000.
Noi was able to leave hospital in February 2008. She is now in good health and is able to care for her family once again.
